In Under the exhibition title Relictum, Andreas Binder Gallery is presenting artworks by the artist Jan Davidoff for the third time.
Here, earlier pictorial themes, such as questions of locating the individual observer in a world primarily articulated by mass media, are increasingly giving way to the examination of nature as the essence of everything past and all future.
Withered sunflowers as symbols of the simultaneity of transience and life become the central topic of the exhibition, while images of people are appearing only as relics, reminding the betrayer of sunflowers. At the same time, Jan Davidoff remains true to his style and his artistic approach by using photographs as models for large-scale works on canvas, although the interplay of background and his motif selection is becoming increasingly important.
While the canvas itself is suggesting materiality and complexity by the order of different material and color layers (marble flour, pure color pigments, ground glass, mica and synthetic resin), the actual depth of the work is created by the transfer of the figurative, almost woodcut-like motif on the surface, that causes a break in style.
